Brig. Gen. Dr,. Eng. Awni Mohammed Khasawneh, director general of the Royal Jordanian Geographical Centre (RJGC) and director of the Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education for Western Asia (RCSSTE- WA), has chaired the meetings of the Space 2030 Working Group, which extended from Jun 11- 16 2019, at Vienna, Austria. Dr. Al-Khasawneh previously elected to present Jordan on the group.
This group – leading by Dr. Al-Khasawneh- was commissioned to prepare a strategic plan for the global governance of space activities [Space 2030 Agenda], built on four basic principles: the space economy, the space community, easy access to space and space diplomacy. It worthy saying that, president of the Romanian Space Agency, astronaut Dr. Domitro Doreen, Ambassador of Italy to Austria Dr. Achili and Dr. Romana Kovler the Officer of Outer Space Office are members of this group. The Space 2030 Working Group, is one of the working groups of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee (STSC) of the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) Committee is holding its sixty-second session from 11-22 June 2019 in the Austrian capital Vienna. It has more than 80 countries as a members.
This space plan [Space 2030 Agenda], based on the four basic principles, aims at strengthening the global partnership in space exploration and innovation, establishing the outer space legal regime and global space governance, enhancing the exchange of information on space objects and events and creating the international framework for space weather services. This plan also aims at promoting space collaboration for global health and enhancing global cooperation aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing the capacity of communities to adapt to the needs of developing countries in this area.
In the inaugural session of the session, Brig. General Dr. Eng. Al Khasawneh delivered a speech on the important roles played by RJGC and RCSSTE- WA at Jordan .He also gave an overview discussion about the specialized scientific workshop which was held at Jordan in last March, Entitled “Global partnership in space exploration and innovation”, organized jointly by RCSSTE- WA and UNOOSA.
The UNOOSA Director and the participants appreciated the highly professional organized of “Global partnership in space exploration and innovation” event.It is worthy to state that Jordan has been a member of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in 2011, and has always sought the support of developed countries to work on sustainable development through these space programs, scientific and technical fields as well.
